Carpet cleaned by truck-mounted hot water extraction is usually dry to the touch within a few hours and fully dry the same day. Drying time depends on how much water the equipment leaves behind, the fibre and pile depth, how much soil had to be flushed, the room's humidity and temperature, and airflow. Rental and portable machines leave more water in the carpet and commonly take a day or more.

## Why does a truck-mount leave carpet drier?

Drying time is mostly about how much water is left in the carpet when the cleaner leaves, and that is a vacuum question. A truck-mounted unit runs a large blower off its own engine and pulls through a wide hose, so each pass of the wand recovers most of the water it just put down. A machine plugged into a wall outlet is limited by the power the outlet can give it. The result is that the same carpet, cleaned the same afternoon, can be dry by dinner with a truck-mount and still damp the next morning with a rental. ## How can I speed up drying?

1. **Move air.** Set the furnace or air handler fan to "on" rather than "auto". Turn on ceiling fans. A box fan pointed across the carpet helps more than you would expect.
2. **Dry air beats warm air.** In winter, the furnace's dry air does the work. In humid summer, closed windows and air conditioning dry carpet faster than open windows do.
3. **Keep off it.** Foot traffic on damp carpet presses soil from shoes into an open pile. Clean socks only until dry.
4. **Leave the pile groomed.** The cleaner should groom the carpet so the fibres stand up and dry evenly without wand marks. Do not rearrange it.
5. **Let cushions and furniture breathe.** Upholstery dries slower than carpet; stand cushions on edge.

## When can furniture go back?

Light furniture can go back on damp carpet with foil or plastic tabs under wooden or metal legs, which the cleaner leaves in place. Remove them when the carpet is fully dry. Heavy pieces are better left until dry. Wood stain and metal rust both transfer to damp carpet, and that is a stain that does not come out.

## Is damp carpet a mould risk?

Carpet that dries within a day is not. The concern with mould is prolonged dampness, which is why over-wetting by underpowered equipment matters and why basement carpet gets extra airflow.
