The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends professionally deep cleaning carpet every 12 to 18 months, and Shaw Floors, one of the largest carpet manufacturers, says every 6 to 18 months depending on traffic. Homes with pets, young children or allergies sit at the short end of that range. Upholstery that is used daily benefits from cleaning on a similar cycle. Yes, when the operator matches temperature, pressure and chemistry to the material. That is the whole skill. Synthetic carpet takes high heat and pressure well. Wool needs cooler water and a neutral rinse. Some upholstery fabrics need a low-moisture method instead of extraction, and we say so on the walk-through rather than find out afterwards.
