The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), the industry body for carpet manufacturers in North America, publishes homeowner guidance that says: "Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime." The same page sets the vacuuming baseline: "As a rule of thumb, you should vacuum at least once a week with a quality vacuum cleaner." Shaw Floors' carpet care page is more specific about method and gives a wider band: "Schedule a professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning) anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on traffic." Shaw also recommends vacuuming traffic lanes daily in busy homes.

Does frequent cleaning wear carpet out?

Removing that grit, by vacuuming and by periodic extraction, is what extends the life of the carpet.
